Shade over children at play imposes a distinct set of requirements. A canopy that works over a car park is not automatically suitable over a playground.

Equipment Surface Temperature — Direct sun pushes rubber surfacing, metal slides, and plastic components to temperatures that can cause contact burns. Shade over the equipment, not just beside it, is what controls this.

Clearance and Fall Zones — Canopies must clear the equipment’s fall zone and not introduce new impact hazards. Support positions are coordinated around the play layout.

Climbability — Children will attempt to climb anything reachable. Frames, bracing, and low-level fixings must be detailed to remove handholds and footholds.

UV Protection — Children receive significantly more sun exposure than adults relative to body weight. Shade fabric UV-blocking performance is a health specification, not a marketing point.

Coverage Geometry — Effective shade depends on sun angle, canopy height, and the time of day the area is used. A canopy that only shades at noon fails when the play area is busiest in the afternoon.

Material Safety — Coating and membrane materials must be stable and appropriate for a child-occupied environment, with no exposed sharp edges or detachable components.
