Architectural PTFE structure
Site-specific architectural membranes, structural steelwork and turnkey installation — engineered by our Sharjah team for the UAE climate.
Tensile structures combine high-strength membranes with carefully engineered steel frameworks to create generous, shaded spaces. AL RAYHAN SHADES coordinates the complete service, from site assessment and 3D design to fabrication, onsite erection and final tensioning.
Each solution is developed around its span, exposure and intended use. Our in-house team considers UAE wind conditions, foundation requirements and material performance before the structure reaches your site.
Share your site location, approximate dimensions and intended use. Our engineers can help define the right structural approach.
In a tensile structure, the membrane is a load-bearing element. It is not a sheet laid over a frame. It carries forces, transmits them to supports, and must be shaped so that those forces keep it stable.
That has direct consequences for design:
Double Curvature Is Essential — A membrane must curve in two directions — typically one concave and one convex. This is what puts the fabric into tension from multiple directions at once, preventing flapping and giving the structure its stability. Flat or single-curved membranes behave unpredictably under wind.
Prestress Must Be Calculated — The membrane is cut smaller than the finished span and stretched into place. The prestress level must hold the fabric taut under wind load without over-stressing seams or edge details.
Support Geometry Drives Performance — The shape of the structure — conical, hypar, vaulted, arched — determines how loads flow into the supports. Geometry is chosen for the site, not copied from a catalogue.
Edge and Corner Detailing Carries the Load — Cathedges, corner plates, and connection hardware are where tension concentrates. Poor detailing here is the most common cause of tensile structure failure in the UAE.
Foundations Must Match Uplift — Tensile structures generate significant uplift. Anchoring is calculated for the actual wind exposure of the site.
PVC-Coated Polyester — The most widely used tensile fabric. Good strength-to-cost ratio, available in a broad colour range, and suited to most commercial and residential applications. UV-stabilised coatings required for Gulf exposure.
PTFE-Coated Fibreglass — Premium tensile membrane with excellent UV, chemical, and thermal resistance. Longer service life and a bright architectural appearance. Suited to high-specification, landmark, and long-life projects.
HDPE Shade Net — Not a tensile structural membrane in the same sense, but widely used in tensioned form for high-airflow shading. Economical and suited to budget or ventilation-led applications.
ETFE and Specialist Systems — Where project requirements justify specialist solutions, we can advise on feasibility and whether a tensile approach or an alternative system is the better fit.
Where a project needs genuinely large-span coverage with architectural presence, tensile is usually the right answer. Where the priority is vehicle circulation or minimal visual weight, other systems may fit better — and we’ll say so.

Architectural-grade PVC, PTFE or PVDF for waterproof tensile canopies. HDPE supports breathable shading where appropriate.
Hot-dip galvanized and epoxy powder-coated steel substructures help protect against atmospheric exposure.
Grade 316 stainless steel tension cables and marine-grade hardware connect the membrane to its supporting framework.
